Sonoma County reclassifies Park Rangers as "public officers," removing law enforcement duties from the agency. This seems like a significant win, despite the fact that a new, much smaller force within Sonoma County Sheriff's dept. will be created to fill the void. Reducing the number of categories of people who think of themselves as cops is good. And anything that makes police unions upset is worthwhile.
"The new parks unit at the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office will be made up of four deputies and a sergeant that will be assigned to cover the county’s 60 parks overseen by Sonoma County Regional Parks. They will only operate from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Some of the funding for the positions will come from savings from vacant park ranger positions that have not been filled."
