Traffic violence continues to increase in #washington. Will #waleg act or will we just keep prioritizing fast private vehicles everywhere with no real limits?
@rachael was thinking about this on my taxi ride home last night. My driver was going a bit over 50 down Elliot. The road, and perhaps his job, encourages this behavior. It seems to delusional to think awareness/education campaigns will help
@dgodon @rachael This. We have this problem too in MA: the financial incentives to go fast are omnipresent. The physical infrastructure allows it. It would take tenfold more cops to meaningfully police it, and that has huge negative externalities.
We can only fix it by changing the infrastructure or the economic incentives.
@dgodon @rachael Elliott/15th are particularly bad because the roadway was designed for much higher speeds than the current limit. Without structurally changing that road and/or adding speed enforcement, drivers go whatever speed seems reasonable for the road design. Slapping up 25mph limit signs on a 7 lane highway is not a solution (and does absolutely nothing ime)
