AI6YR Ben
4. Here is the bicycle area of the Pacific Surfliner. You may need to remove the panniers and stow them if there are a lot of bikes. Key thing is to know which side of the train the bicycle train is! In my area, it's always the southern most car. Otherwise you will be running to find the right place! AI6YR Ben
So, #lessons from this trip (Amtrak -> Destination -> Amtrak Return)

1. Need to remember that Amtrak is aspirational travel, i.e. you want to go where your ticket is taking you, but you PROBABLY won't get there at the time it says. i.e. You'll get there EVENTUALLY, not without adventure and delays, but at least there is a bathroom on board.

2. Amtrak does allow bikes, but it is on a ROUTE-BY-ROUTE basis, and you need reservations. There is a single car with bicycle racks (on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, approx. officially 6 spots per train, though one of the trains had enough space for 8 bikes). They don't seem to check, but if you run out of room, could be an issue.

(cont) #Amtrak

gcvsa ⭐️🔰🇺🇸 🇵🇭
It's also pretty obvious that the manufacturers of #travel devices do not account properly for the fact that #trains do not have as reliable #power systems as aircraft, at least, not in the US.

On #Amtrak, intermittent power is the rule, and while this may not be much of an issue for people who are using the AC accessory outlets for devices which have built-in batteries, it plays havoc with other devices.

I can only hope that it's better in the EU and elsewhere, but I just don't know.

Rob Bellinger
I'm trying #Amtrak #EmpireService RHI-NYP instead of #Trailways and it is a fascinating microcosm containing almost every Amtrak issue. Trains are canceled due to work on an East River tunnel, even though the route doesn't use them except for yard access. But AMTK needs to accommodate NJT trains (also for yard storage) in those tunnels. Because there is no through-running, because there is no inter-agency cooperation. Also: boarding through only 2 doors, no assigned seating, wifi comes and goes.

AI6YR Ben
Seriously, Amtrak, why are you using AES encoded data for your train tracking map? AndThisIsMrsPeacock 🏳‍🌈
There's a whole thread in this that I'll write someday, but tl;dr the fact that after the 1970 rail industry collapse we ended up with a single, universal, continent-spanning, publicly owned, congressionally authorized rail passenger operator (thanks...Nixon?!?!) was like a one in a million miracle in the first place and the fact that it's survived 50 years of conservative fuckery and is more popular than ever shows just how good an idea it is.

#Amtrak #Transit #RailTravel
