Eugene ParnellVisiting RSBG continued. Last but not least are these spectacular Himalayan lilies (Cardiocrinum giganteum). In June, the flower stem here will shoot up to about 10 feet (3 meters) in height and develop a cluster of large fragrant lily flowers. It takes years for a plant to mature to blooming size like this and they die after they bloom. Eugene ParnellVisiting RSBG continued. This stunningly symmetrical plant is quite rare in cultivation. Paris polyphylla is a Chinese relative of our North American trilliums. Photos 1-2: this really fresh looking ground cover is a kind of fleece flower, Persicaria virginiana, probably a variety called 'Lance Corporal' because of the chevrons on its leaves. The species is native to Eastern North America. The understory here contains all kinds of unusual plants. 1) a stump with a native cover (Asarum caudatum). 2) this plant doesn't look Closely related to the first but it is. Saruma henryi, native to China (Saruma is an anagram for Asarum proving that botanists have a sense of humor).
