The Girl and the Bear
In the quiet forest, walks a gentle bear. Upon his sunny back a young girl sleeps.

A shot of this area from the opposite angle. With most of the spruce saplings removed we're allowing self-seeded woody and deciduous species to establish, especially Norwegian maple (Acer platanoides), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), goat willow (Salix caprea) and guelder rose (Viburnum opulus). We're also planning to transplant in new species of heartnut (Juglans ailantifolia) and sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa).

Bonus capture jumping the queue today because I'm burning with curiosity:

What caused the damage to this tree's bark in this patterned fashion? Was the lower rupture likely made by the same force?

Putting these questions to all the woodspeople, forest folk, ecologists, biologists, botanists, entomologists, and other science hippies in the Fediverse. Please scratch my itch 🙏

(P.S. No, I didn't capture any other images of the tree; and, no, I can't positively ID the tree. I'm terrible with tree ID. An alder? A young...something or other? Sorry 🙇)
