Will the milquetoast incrementalists that control the New York State Democratic Party help lift their candidates to victory and topple enough MAGA incumbents to pave the way for a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives and a speaker of the House from Brooklyn?

Or have the Democrats once again taken everything—time, consultants, you—for granted, teeing up yet another embarrassing showing at the polls?

We're about to find out because yes, it's Election Day once again.

Setting aside the national contest (Haha! AHHHHHHHHH!) for a moment, Governor Kathy Hochul, Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs, and other Democrats in their mold have the most on the line today.

That's because back in 2022, they got their asses kicked when New York Republicans bucked a national trend of sucking in the midterms and flipped four House seats, giving their party control of the legislative body. Hochul and Jacobs looked foolish and unprepared. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi blamed the governor for the disaster. This year, state Democrats swear it's different. We'll see!

I'm very tired of this state's "Democrats" that aren't really. We need to reform our party-system voting.

WHAT??? How did we get here?

When Zhuang was running as a Democrat for the newly created Asian-majority City Council seat last year, her platform was clear—she was pro-cop, anti-crime, pretty much a Republican (as she herself explained to voters, her "ideas are the ideas of the Republican Party"), and deeply, deeply anti-shelter. (Shortly before taking office, Zhuang also admitted to using AI to answer questions from the media and public.)

So here we have a pro-NYPD councilmember apparently assaulting a police officer, something that would net a regular New Yorker an almost automatic trip to Rikers, or at least having a bail amount set.

But that's not what happened to Zhuang, who was released Wednesday night on her own recognizance, and then swiftly returned to the ongoing protests in her district. (What's with South Brooklyn conservative lawmakers brazenly breaking the law and then being let off remarkably easy?)

The point here is that there is no "ideal time" to implement congestion pricing, politically speaking, and that it requires the tiniest kernel of courage, alluded to by Hochul back in December, that she is now willing to admit she does not possess.

"The governor feared that it might deter commuters from returning to the central business district, which has yet to fully recover from the pandemic."

Commuters into the central business district—Manhattan below 60th Street—take mass transit. Millions of them, every single day. According to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, just 1.5 percent of all commuters into the CBD will end up paying the congestion pricing fee. The majority of car commuters into Lower Manhattan are members of law enforcement—people who can afford to pay a few bucks to illegally park their personal vehicles in the most densely populated place in North America, so that they too can have faster commutes with less gridlock.

Then the gates swung open, and NYPD officers stormed into the campus, as other officers pushed the remaining media far away from campus and the arrests. A few minutes later, dozens of arrested students and other protesters began being led out of campus in flex cuffs, to waiting MTA and Corrections buses. The encampment, whose demands included the divestment of CUNY's endowment from companies profiting off of Israel's war on Gaza, was no more.

A few minutes after that, in the center of campus now devoid of students and filled instead with hundreds of police officers, the NYPD's Daughtry raised the American flag, to the cheers of police in riot gear.

When Hell Gate showed up at Suggs's home on Thursday afternoon, the FBI was long gone, and nobody answered the doorbell. That didn't stop a small band of TV news reporters, tabloid stringers, freelance photographers and other feral stakeout creatures from casing the leafy brownstone block looking for something that might justify their ongoing presence there. They found it in Christopher Kelly Burwell Jr., who, according to rumor on the block, had captured video of FBI agents leaving Suggs's apartment.

Burwell, wearing torn jeans, a black hoodie, and a long beard, made his entrance on a white Suzuki scooter blasting Monica's 1996 hit "Before You Walk Out of My Life," peeling up and down the block a couple times and hollering along to the lyrics as reporters attempted to flag him down. He finally came to earth mid-block, parking the scooter but leaving the music playing, singing and dancing like a pied piper as the reporters drew close to him, attempting to establish rapport: "Is that Toni Braxton?" a WNBC correspondent asked.

Burwell, a 53-year resident of the block, had indeed witnessed the raid. "I woke up to the FBI," he said. "I saw the FBI on the block, and it was scary." What was the tip-off that it was the FBI, reporters wanted to know? Burwell looked at the reporters quizzically. "Their jackets," he said. "The FBI—you know, the letters, F, B, I?"
