“On a digital network, public space is not a place (like Facebook), it is the interconnection of sovereign spaces owned and controlled by individuals.”

CapitalBop looks at two bills around sound control that DC Council just passed and it's a good example of criminalization of public space use vs structural changes that are supportive of musicians and buskers.

Edit: someone in the thread points out that this formulation was paraphrased from Sean Tejaratchi: https://web.archive.org/web/20130621083214/http://www.readingfrenzy.com/ledger/2012/03/taking_the_piss
I was able to sit for critique yesterday for an interesting design studio looking at the famous and complicated #marketstreetpark in downtown #cville . What is the best use for this space? The students offered different ideas, from live performance space to a willow oak nursery to a splash pad to an outdoor classroom to another more inclusive historical memorial. I don’t know that we have a unified vision for the future yet but I appreciate these ideas as we ponder. #publicspace #parks #design
Been annoyed in a public space? You are not alone. Elizabeth Blackwell explores the dramas beneath the trees in our latest reading list on parks: https://longreads.com/2024/11/14/come-one-come-all-a-reading-list-on-parks/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social
This is the blue bridge in Freiburg. Built in 1886 it was originally used by cars and trams. In 1961 however the tram tracks were removed and in 1996 the bridge was closed to motor traffic. It since has been dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists only. The bridge is a key piece in the local cycling network, connecting the growing west of Freiburg with the city center. A daily average of 10,000 bicycles cross the bridge. But it is not just a piece of infrastructure. Many people come together on the steps and arches to have a drink or watch the sunset.
Toronto’s next great waterfront public space is almost finished! Touring Bathurst Quay Common and its centrepiece, the restored Canada Malting Co. silos.
The inside of the silos is going to be a great space for temporary art installations (the echoes are pretty amazing).
And it will be a great addition to the Toronto skyline at night!
Got my comment in urging adoption of US Dept of Transportations "PROWAG" proposal to require more accessible public right-of-way infrastructure for sidewalks, curbs, crossings, etc.
Deadline is Sept 23, so there's still time to add your voice. Better accessibility benefits everyone!

This update from the City of Kitchener is a masterclass in how to follow up on public engagement efforts. Explaining who participated, what was said, and how their feedback affects the outcome is so critical to build trust in government — even when the answers might not be what some people want to hear. #urbanism #kwawesome #publicSpace https://www.engagewr.ca/harryclasspool/news_feed/what-we-heard?utm_source=ehq_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ehq-Harry-Class-Pool-What-we-heard-and-next-steps&utm_campaign=website&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ehq

Sonoma County reclassifies Park Rangers as "public officers," removing law enforcement duties from the agency. This seems like a significant win, despite the fact that a new, much smaller force within Sonoma County Sheriff's dept. will be created to fill the void. Reducing the number of categories of people who think of themselves as cops is good. And anything that makes police unions upset is worthwhile.
"The new parks unit at the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office will be made up of four deputies and a sergeant that will be assigned to cover the county’s 60 parks overseen by Sonoma County Regional Parks. They will only operate from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Some of the funding for the positions will come from savings from vacant park ranger positions that have not been filled."

I’ve lived in this city for decades, and only now do I discover (by accident / serendipity) these wonderful modernist pedestrian bridges.
They were part of the 1930 World Expo in Antwerp, built in an old entrenchment-turned-park.

One of my apocalypse mental health coping strategies is choosing silly or celebratory versions of emergency supplies. (Some of my emergency water is carbonated.)
Seeing so many happy people at the new Bamfield Park public swimming platform during the heat warning today pushed that same button -- it's a party version of a public cooling station. Big fan.
